How to Ground Yourself: Practical Tips for Everyday Life

What do you think when you see the words “Ground Yourself” stamped on a bar of all-natural, organic soap? It might sound like a cool or trendy slogan, but to me it’s more than that. It’s a way of living your own, authentic truth. A reminder to live in the here and now.

Depending how you look at it, “Ground Yourself” can take on a physical, mental, or spiritual meaning- and they're all valid points of view.

Physical

Close your eyes and travel back to your childhood. Imagine yourself running around a fluffy carpet with your socks on. Once you did enough laps and generated enough electricity, you could run up to a parent or sibling and shock them- just by getting close to them! You conducted electricity, then discharged it.

This is because human beings are electric beings!

The same thing happens when your body comes into contact with the earth!

Direct contact with the earth, otherwise known as grounding, can be done in dirt, grass, sand, lakes, rivers, oceans- anywhere your body isn't insulated from the earth’s electrical charge. Oceans, with their high salt content, are especially helpful in the transfer of electrons between you and the earth. I knew I always liked going to the beach for some reason!

If you’ve ever learned about electricity or electrical wiring diagrams, you know the earth serves as “ground”, often represented as GND (hence the acronym for Gage’s Natural Deodorizers)! This means the earth neutralizes any and all electrical charges, absorbing and dissolving them in its incredible mass.

Food, movement, thoughts, your environment- everything generates electricity in your brain and body. Over time, this electrical charge starts building up.

But by walking around in rubber-soled shoes, driving around in cars with rubber tires, and keeping your feet locked up, you risk becoming ungrounded. Remaining ungrounded can lead to inflammation, poor sleep, high stress, slower bodily healing, and overall low energy.

There’s countless hobbies that serve to physically ground yourself. Swimming, gardening, yoga, tai chi, hiking, and being barefoot all release tension and help you exchange ions with mother earth.

If you don’t have access to the bare earth on a regular basis, you can use grounding devices to bridge the gap. Check out this video to learn more.

Mental

Physically grounding yourself is great! But grounding yourself mentally is just as, if not more important, than grounding yourself physically!

This is because your thoughts and emotions create your life.

Mentally ungrounded people are, by definition, out of touch with reality. They lack focus, have volatile emotions, and oftentimes battle with anxious thoughts. They have trouble connecting with others, and often struggle with uncomfortable or difficult situations.

If your thoughts are consistently unstable or ungrounded, it can eventually lead to real problems.

When instead you’re mentally grounded, you aren’t ruminating on the past or worrying about the future. Unpleasant thoughts or feelings won’t throw you into a downward spiral. You embody mental clarity, emotional stability, and a calm and relaxed attitude. You’re productive, compassionate, and an overall better person to be around. Taking time out of your day or week to mentally ground yourself exponentially increases your quality of life.

The best ways to mentally ground yourself include meditation, breathing exercises, reciting affirmations, hiking in nature, facing truths, and establishing healthy habits. These practices ground you in the here and now, allowing your mind to rest easy and release all fear or anxiety it may be holding onto.

One of my favorite exercises is to release all tension in my body. I’ll start with my eyes closed, and working from the top of my head down to the bottom of my feet, I’ll mentally “smile” and relax into every part of my body. It always surprises me how much undetected tension your body can store, even over the course of just a few hours! This exercise only takes a few minutes to complete, but it leaves me in a better and clearer state of mind every time.

Spiritual

To take grounding to yet another level, it’s important to be grounded spiritually as well. A little loftier as a concept, someone who’s considered spiritually grounded is calm, cool, and collected. They cultivate an inner peace, presence, and connection with others. They find ways to serve others with loving kindness at the forefront of their mind; they’re living their best lives with clarity and purpose.

When you’re spiritually grounded and aware of how to serve your highest self, you begin a life-changing transformation of healing, growth, and development.

Spiritual groundedness commands an awareness of the body and mind and combines the two harmoniously into one. Living with intention, temptations and distractions are easily tossed aside. Intuition is high, allowing you to listen to your body and respond accordingly. Tapping into and facilitating spiritual groundedness allows your character to evolve into its highest form.

In creating the new you…

You become unshakeable;

You know your limits, and you live with clarity;

You release silly or unconscious habits that no longer serve you;

You let go of things outside your control, and lovingly embrace everything within your control;

Your physical, emotional, and spiritual vibration elevates, serving as an example for others to follow.

But spiritual groundness only comes after you become  physically and mentally grounded- and it’s always a work in progress. Spiritually grounded people are often caught in mindful meditation, outside in nature, practicing or learning more about spirituality, journaling, practicing gratitude, living healthy lives, and cultivating an overall higher state of awareness.

Conclusion

As you can see, “Ground Yourself” is more than just a trendy slogan. It’s a call for you to live up to your highest potential; a method of cultivating inner awareness of you and your relationship to the outside world. A reminder of who you are and what you stand for.

Being physically, mentally, and spiritually grounded is the gateway to the new you.
